Today we are visiting Kirstens Quilt in Hedehusene, Denmark, the Danish winner of our Local Quilt Shop Contest
in both 2023 and 2024.

Kirstens Quilt began in 2004, opening first as an online shop, and four years later, moving into a brick-and-mortar location. Kirsten, the owner and operator, is a certified Studio 180 instructor and works hard to provide her customers with a full range of quilting and bag-making supplies.

Fabrics galore…

Kirstens Quilt is full of gorgeous, bright fabrics including a has a wonderful selection of batiks and prints. They carry a variety of patterns (including lots of ByAnnie patterns). You’ll find bag hardware, mesh, zippers, and other bag accessories needed for those projects.

She carries a variety of battings – wool, cotton/poly, silk, and more, and a large selection of thread, including King Tut and Glide machine quilting thread.

About the space…

Built on what used to be a farm, the 2500 square feet of shopping space was previously a horse stable.

It’s large open space transitioned beautifully into the retail portion of the store and the old hayloft has been converted to a large classroom. You can find both local and international instructors teaching up to 20 students at a time in the loft space.  Filled with natural light and adorned with beautiful quilts, the space is welcoming to both local and visiting students.

Classes are available on various techniques, among them machine quilting with rulers, paper piecing, and textile art. Students can join for open sews and special events, including shop hops each summer.

When you visit…

If you live in Scandinavia (or are lucky enough to be planning a trip to Denmark!), be sure to stop in and check them out!

Make sure to schedule some extra time to visit the Roskilde Cathedral, the 12th century basilica that is  just five miles away. It was the first Scandinavian cathedral to be made from brick and has been the mausoleum for the Danish royal family since the 15th century.

And if you head to nearby Hedeland, you can actually go troll hunting! You’ll find the Glade Anders troll nearby, but there are many more of these Thomas Dambo sculptures throughout the world. (Check out the map!)

I so enjoyed learning more about Kirstens Quilt and hope you did, too!
