Rhode Island, lovingly called the Ocean State, is famous for its beaches and charming small-town vibe — but quilters know it for something extra special:
Blackstone Quilting Company, the 2023 and 2024 Local Quilt Shop Contest Regional Winner for Rhode Island.
Located in Cumberland, Blackstone Quilting Company is more than a quilt shop—it’s a haven for creativity, community, and craftsmanship.
This family-run store was started by three sisters, Jessica, Whitney, and Robynne, who turned their lifelong love for crafting into a full-service quilting destination.
Their journey began with a shared passion inspired by their grandmother Elsie, who taught them to knit, crochet, cross-stitch, and quilt.
After her passing, the sisters delved deeper into pieced quilting, and Whitney even bought a longarm quilting machine.
When the owner of their favorite local fabric store announced her retirement in 2021, the sisters saw an opportunity to fill a void for quilters in Northern Rhode Island.
By January 2022, Blackstone Quilting Company opened its doors, and in May 2023, it expanded into a spacious, 6,000 square foot location.
Rhode Island’s Quilting Community Center
This incredible space houses an extensive collection of fabrics (from traditional civil-war-era styles to modern designs), notions, classroom space, and longarm quilting services.
It’s the only full-service quilt shop in Northern Rhode Island, offering machine sales, rentals, and quilting services for both Handi Quilter and INNOVA systems.
Blackstone Quilting Company isn’t just about selling fabric — it’s about building a community.
The shop thrives thanks to its talented and enthusiastic team.
Joy and Stephanie, their knowledgeable sales associates, specialize in quilting, bag-making, and cross-stitch.
Amy is the go-to longarm quilter and fabric expert, while Sue runs their open-sew classroom, and Joanne helps with events.
Their mom, Patricia, adds a family touch by crafting the newsletters that keep everyone in the loop.
The shop also shines when it comes to creating unique experiences for its customers.
For instance, their Sip and Sew nights combine crafting and cuisine, with catering provided by Andrew’s Bistro, their next-door neighbor.
It’s a delightful way to make a seasonal project while enjoying good food and great company.
In April, Blackstone hosted its first sleepaway quilting retreat at Arrowhead Acres, where 60 sewists gathered for a weekend of quilting, fun, and friendship.
For many, a visit to Blackstone Quilting Company is like a mini retreat itself.
Customers rave about the shop’s welcoming atmosphere, with one happy visitor, Nancy, describing it as “an affirming and no-judgment-zone shop where staff are kind, helpful, and encouraging.”
Another customer shared, “Everyone who works there is so nice. They are so helpful all the time. They have great stock. It’s just an overall fantastic experience. Every time I go there.”
