Graceful Marilyn Quilt Shoppe (gracefulmarilyn.com), located in Marshall on the southwestern border of Minnesota, is the realization of a childhood dream for sisters Michelle Salfer and Heather Rokeh.

Growing up on a farm, the sisters developed a passion for sewing and quilting under the guidance of their mother, Marilyn, with whom they spent countless hours crafting. When they heard that the local quilt shop owner was retiring, they seized the opportunity to take over and open their own store.

In October 2021, Graceful Marilyn Quilt Shoppe opened its doors, named in honor of their mother and the elegance they wanted to reflect in their work.

The shop boasts over 6,000 square feet of retail space, filled with fabrics, embroidery supplies, patterns, books, and quilt kits. But their commitment to making doesn’t stop with sewing.

They have also created the Makers Market, a space within the shop that showcases handmade goods from other local creators, such as upcycled sweater mittens, goat milk soaps, crochet toys, and more, including dog bandanas made by Heather’s daughter.

A Family Affair and Community Hub

Graceful Marilyn Quilt Shoppe is a true family business. Alongside Heather and Michelle, you’ll often find Heather’s daughter, their mother Marilyn, cousin Dawn, and even Heather’s mother-in-law, Helen, working in the shop. The team also includes non-family members like Marissa, Cindy, LeeAnn, and Lori, representing various crafting generations.

Known for their friendly, community-focused atmosphere, the shop hosts regular classes and events, supporting makers of all skill levels. Customers like Jackie, a new quilter, have praised the staff for their helpful advice and encouragement, creating a welcoming space for learning and creativity.

Despite being in a small town, Graceful Marilyn Quilt Shoppe attracts visitors from all over, including neighboring states like North Dakota and South Dakota. With nearby attractions like the weekly Farmer’s Market and events at Southwest Minnesota State University, there’s plenty to explore in Marshall. So next time you’re in the area, make sure to stop by and say hello to the team.
