Kate’s Open Quilt Studio, in Shediac Bridge, New Brunswick, is a community hub like no other in the Great White North.
Recognized as the Regional Winner for New Brunswick in the 2024 Local Quilt Shop Contest, this shop is more than just a place to buy fabric.
It’s a cherished community hub where quilting and creativity thrive.
Despite the community’s love for this shop, it was never part of owner Kate O’Brien’s plan for her life.
Kate’s life has always been steeped in quilting — she grew up in the quilting community, surrounded by guild meetings, shows, and workshops.
While she might have told others she would “never be a quilter”, Kate’s appreciation for the craft eventually grew into a full blown passion.
After working in mental health for nearly a decade, Kate took the plunge in 2018 to open her studio, repurposing a 40’ x 40’ welding space into a welcoming quilt shop.
Despite the challenges of launching a new business just as she was starting her family, Kate’s passion has helped introduce quilting to a whole new generation in Shediac Bridge.
Locals aren’t shy about singing the praises of Kate’s Open Quilt Studio.
Loyal customers rave about the shop’s role in the community, with many expressing how much their loved ones—whether moms, wives, or quilting friends—adore the place.
Some, like Dennis and his wife Gisèle, even drive 200 kilometers for the chance to visit, find new fabrics, and get inspired.
At Kate’s, ‘quilting is not just a craft; it’s an act of love’, as she is known for saying.
And with so many in the community attesting to the joy the shop brings to their lives, it’s clear that Kate’s has become a special place for those near and far.
A Quilting Experience Like No Other
Kate’s Open Quilt Studio celebrated its five-year anniversary in March, marking a half decade of growth, passion, and community.
Over the years, they’ve expanded to include a larger storefront, classroom, and warehouse.
Today they offer a unique selection of fabrics from renowned designers like Kaffe Fassett, Tula Pink, and Tilda.
The shop’s shelves brim with carefully curated fabrics, bold colors, and classic prints that are sure to delight any quilter.
With an eye for quality, Kate only stocks top-tier tools and materials that can help quilters at every level hone their skills and enjoy the process of creating.
“Classes are offered in person and online. They will guide you through every step of building your quilt and will even quilt it for you when it’s finished. If you are looking for a spot to brighten your day I would definitely recommend a stop at Kate’s Open Quilt Studio.” ~ Lorie Anne, a 2024 Contest Voter
The studio’s class offerings are another major draw. They offer both in-person and live online classes covering everything from beginner to advanced quilting techniques, as well as embroidery and machine-specific techniques.
Whether you’re tackling your first By Annie bag or exploring intricate machine embroidery, these classes, taught by experienced instructors, provide a warm and encouraging environment.
Plus, the studio is full of after-class resources to keep the learning going long after the lesson is over.
